Raja Farooq Haider Khan of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) took oath as the new prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), after enjoying the two-third majority, 38 members out of 49.
AJK President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan administered the oath to him at a ceremony here at the lawns of AJK Legislative Assembly building. The ceremony was attended by outgoing Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, members of Legislative Assembly and Kashmir Council, high officials, PML-N leaders and over 1,000 party workers, besides the relatives of the new prime minister.
Addressing the ceremony after taking oath of office, he reiterated his pledge to pursue merit, justice and good governance in the government affairs and vowed to wipe out the menace of corruption. “Justice for all without any discrimination, equality before law and merit will be the top priorities of his government to establish good governance,” he said.
He also said, “Transfer of power up to gross root level through local body elections and Kashmir issue would also be his priority.”
Paying tribute to the Kashmiri freedom fighter Burhan Wani, whose had been recently killed by the Indian forces in the Indian-held Kashmir, he said that his government would prepare a proactive Kashmir policy with the consultation of the Government of Pakistan to accelerate the freedom struggle and turn the state into a real base camp for it.
He strongly condemned the state terrorism by Indian forces against peaceful innocent Kashmiris struggling for their internationally recognized right to self-determination.
He also expressed gratitude to people and government of Pakistan for expressing complete solidarity with the Kashmiris. PM AJK Raja Farooq Haider kept his promise of having small cabinet. A small cabinet of 9 members took the oath of the following departments.

Qadir, who is also secretary general of the party’s AJK chapter, bagged 39 votes. His rival Amir Ghaffar Lone, a nominee of PPP, secured four votes while All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference candidate Malik Nawaz polled three votes. During the process two votes of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were rejected.
At this occasion newly elected speaker of AJK Assembly, Shah Ghulam Qadir said, “Besides to maintain the honour and dignity of the house our prayers are with valiant Kashmiris living in Indian occupied Kashmir.

Masood Khan got 42 votes while Chaudhry Latif Akbar from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) received six votes. Muslim Conference and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) had boycotted the elections. PPP and PML-N had both fielded their candidates for the post of presidency. PPP had nominated Chaudhry Latif Akbar while the PML-N nominated former delegate Masood Khan for the presidential elections. Seven members of the Kashmir Council and 48 members of the Azad Kashmir legislative assembly voted for the new President. Last month, PML-N won a landslide victory in the general elections in the province. PML-N candidate Raja Farooq Haider Khan was elected as the prime minister.
He is the right person for the right job having a strong profile.
Currently he was working as the Director General Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad, Pakistan. He also served as Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (October 2012 to February 2015). In this capacity, from October 2013 to December 2014, he represented Pakistan as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council.
He was also Pakistan’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (September 2008 to September 2012) and served as Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva (March 2005 to September 2008). He was Pakistan’s Sherpa (Chief Negotiator) for the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) process from 2009 to early 2015.

From August 2003 to March 2005, he worked as Director General (United Nations) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad. From September 2003 to May 2004, he served as Director General (Disarmament). In June 2003, he was appointed as Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he held till March 2005. From November 2002 to August 2003, he worked as Director General (East Asia and Pacific).
He also worked, in various positions, in Pakistan’s diplomatic missions in Beijing (1982 to 1986), The Hague (1986 to 1989), the United Nations New York (1993 to 1997) and Washington DC (1997 to 2002).
Over the years, he has also specialized in multilateral diplomacy and important bilateral relationships, especially with China and the United States. Various positions he has held in multilateral and intergovernmental forums.
Mr. Khan has attended many UN conferences and summits as delegate, representative and leader. He has spoken widely at various national and international forums, think tanks and academic institutions on international affairs, strategic issues, economic development, energy, nuclear security, and disarmament.
Before joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan, Mr. Khan was a Lecturer in English. During that period he was also a TV presenter; and an English newscaster.
The Great Daughter of Kashmir, created parliamentary history by becoming the only female politician to have been elected six times as Member of Legislative Assembly Azad Kashmir
The only Female elected candidate of AJK Legislative Assembly, Mrs Noreen Arif known as The Daughter of Kashmir, has created the history by getting elected sixth time as the member of Azad Kashmir Legislative assembly, from her constituency Kotla LA-24 Muzaffarabad. She was the only female ticket holder of PMLn in AJK. It was also the history of Kotla LA-24 that no candidate has ever secured the seat from here for the second time but Mrs Noreen Arif marked a milestone by winning with heavy margin. She got 19940 votes against Mir Attiqurehman MC 9918, Sardar Muhammad Javed Khan PPP 9365 and Sardar Tabarak PTI 9723.
Mrs Noreen Arif remained the member district council 1983 to 1987 and member of AJK Assembly from 1985 to 2011. She completed 5 full tenures except 1990 which lasted for 9 months only. During these tenures she served as minister for agriculture, animal husbandry, social welfare, population welfare, information, education and advisor to the Government of AJK. She travelled to many countries, as the part of parliamentarian delegations, like UK, USA, Australia, France, Switzerland and Ireland. In these visits, she highlighted the Kashmir issue and emphasis on the peaceful resolution of the issue according to the will of People of Kashmir and United Nation Security Council resolutions. She is also the president of PMLn women wing AJK.
The Daughter of Kashmir, Mrs Noreen Arif, has secured her position as MLA 6th times, in 2016, it is the credit to her performance and services for people without discrimination of color, cast and creed. It is the sincerity of her to the people of Kashmir which forced Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif specially mentioned her during his speech in Muzaffarabad at 22nd of July 2016. He assured his full support and cooperation in fulfilling the promises she made with the people of her constituency and AJK. It reflects her sincerity and seriousness to deliver to the people. She is sincere and only female member of the current cabinet and allotted with the ministry of Women Development, Industries, Labour, Minerals and Social Welfare. At this occasion she vowed to work for the development of women of AJK and create the opportunities for the women and make them work shoulder to shoulder of men, to pay their part in the progress and development of AJK.
Mrs Noreen Arif,The daughter of Kashmir, belongs to one of the most respectable family of AJK, the family of Sultan Muzaffar Khan founder of Muzaffarabad. Her father (maternal) was a member Azad Kashmir Assembly. Her father remained minister for three times and was also among few people who passed the resolution for joining of Kashmir with Pakistan, at Srinagar, in 1947, in the consequences of which, he was put behind the bars. He migrated to Pakistan later 1948 .Her father also played a major role in bringing Sardar Ibrahim out of the state and brought the documents from Srinagar regarding joining of Gilgit Bultistan to Pak Army.
